Kaum ein anderes Land in Europa gibt es, das so lange verkannt und als romantisch exotisches Land mystifiziert worden wäre wie Albanien. Mehr als vier Jahrzehnte hatte die kommunistische Diktatur in einer Abkapselung vom Rest der Welt geherrscht, die von dieser mit Vergessenheit beantwortet wurde. Die deutsche Fotografin Jutta Benzenberg hat gemeinsam mit dem Albaner Ardian Klosi dieses ärmste Land Europas in einer Zeit des Umbruchs und der Veränderungen mehrmals bereist. Ihre Schwarzweißfotos aus den Jahren 1991 und 1992 zeigen die Intensität der Begegnung mit einem nahezu unbekannten Land. Arme Bauern und Bergbewohner, die noch heute wie im Mittelalter leben, ex-politische Gefangene oder Verbannte, die der Welt das traurigste Kapitel in der Geschichte dieses Landes erzählen, Kinder auf eigenartigen Spielplätzen, die Augen von Erwachsenen haben, Frauen, deren Alter durch mehrfache Unterdrückung nicht mehr zu erkennen ist, Landschaften, die Zeichen des Verfalls zeigen. Jutta Benzenbergs Fotografien stellen die albanischen Menschen in den Vordergrund, leidende Menschen, die dennoch lachen und die wichtigste Eigenschaft der Albaner vermitteln, mit allen Mitteln zu überleben. In seinen "Notizen aus einem schwierigen Land" erzählt Ardian Klosi im gleichnamigen Bildband zu den fotografischen Tableaus Geschichten, die zu erklären suchen, warum diese Menschen so leben, wie sie heute leben und warum Europa die Albaner nicht länger der Vergessenheit preisgeben sollte.
There is hardly any other country in Europe that has been misunderstood and mystified as a romantically exotic country for so long as Albania. For more than four decades, the communist dictatorship had ruled in an isolation from the rest of the world, which it answered with oblivion. The German photographer Jutta Benzenberg, together with the Albanian Ardian Klosi, has travelled several times to this poorest country in Europe in a time of upheaval and change. Her black-and-white photographs from 1991 and 1992 show the intensity of the encounter with a virtually unknown country. Poor farmers and mountain dwellers who still live today as in the Middle Ages, ex-political prisoners or exiles who tell the world the saddest chapter in the history of this country, children in strange playgrounds who have the eyes of adults, women whose age is no longer recognizable due to multiple oppression, landscapes that show signs of decay. Jutta Benzenberg's photographs put the Albanian people in the foreground, suffering people who nevertheless laugh and convey the most important characteristic of Albanians: to survive by all means. In his "Notes from a Difficult Country", Ardian Klosi tells stories in the illustrated book of the same name about the photographic tableaus, which seek to explain why these people live the way they do today and why Europe should no longer abandon the Albanians to oblivion.

Jutta Benzenberg studierte Fotografie an der „Staatlichen Fachakademie für Fotodesign“ München und war anschließend als Fotografin für verschiedene Magazine und Theater tätig. Zusätzliche arbeitete zunächst als Kameraassistentin bei einigen Fernsehsendern wie das Bayerische Fernsehen dann später auch als Kamerafrau bei Pro 7.
1991 reiste sie zum ersten Mal mit Hilfe ihres Mannes, dem albanischen Schriftsteller Ardian Klosi (+2012) durch Albanien, um mit Ihrer Kamera diese Zeit des Umbruchs festzuhalten. Nach mehreren Albanienreisen veröffentlichte Jutta Benzenberg und Ardian Klosi im Frühjahr 1993 ihr erstes Fotobuch mit dem Titel „Albanisches Überleben“ im Otto Müller Verlag in Salzburg.
Mit diesen Fotos hatte Jutta viele Ausstellungen zu albanischen Themen in verschiedenen Städten Deutschlands, Frankreichs, Österreichs, Italiens, der Schweiz und Albanien.
Das zweite Buch von Jutta Benzenberg und Ardian Klosi „Bukuri e rëndë“ - „Sombre Beauty“ wurde 2004 in Tirana veröffentlicht. Die Fotografien dieses Buches zeigte sie bei der Biennale Tirana (AL), Think Pink (Prishtina, KO) am Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki und Athen, in Frankfurt im Palais Jalta und bei der Weltausstellung in Hannover.
2011 erschien in der FOTOHOF edition Salzburg der Bildband „Ahead with the Past“.
Ihre letzten Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen fanden in Rumänien, Österreich, Kosovo, Griechenland, Deutschland, Montenegro, Serbien, Albanien, in den USA (Washington DC) und Lateinamerika statt.
Von 2013 bis 2014 arbeitete sie als offizielle Fotografin des albanischen Premierministers Edi Rama.
2015-2017 arbeitete sie in Berlin an dem Projekt „Albanien trifft Deutschland“.
Seit 2018 ist sie Mitglied der Agentur Focus in Deutschland.
Sie gibt auch Foto-Workshops (Visual Storytelling und Porträts) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fotohof in Salzburg und in Albanien.
Seit 2017 arbeitet sie vorwiegend mit freien Fotoprojekten.
Ihre neuesten Projekte sind unter anderem:
"Religionen in Albanien", unterstützt vom Auswärtigen Amt Berlin.
"Unseen"(Familien in Europa) eine Zusammenarbeit mit drei weiteren Fotografen aus Deutschland, Weißrussland und Italien unterstützt vom Goethe Institut.
"Die Herzensösterreicher", unterstützt von der Österreichischen Botschaft Tirana.
Zur Zeit (2020) lebt sie in München und Tirana.
Jutta Benzenberg studied photography at the „Staatliche Fachakademie für Fotodesign“ Munich and subsequently worked as a photographer for various magazines and theaters. Additionally, she worked as a camera assistant for several television stations such as Bayerisches Fernsehen, then later also as a camerawoman at Pro 7.
In 1991 she travelled through Albania for the first time with the help of her husband, the Albanian writer Ardian Klosi (+2012), to capture this time of upheaval with her camera. After several trips to Albania, Jutta Benzenberg and Ardian Klosi published their first photo book entitled "Albanian Survival" in the spring of 1993 at Otto Müller Verlag in Salzburg.
With these photos Jutta had many exhibitions on Albanian topics in different cities in Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Albania.
